Peter Zumthor is possibly the most innovative European architect working today. In 2002, the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor was commissioned as part of Norway’s Tourist Route initiative to create a small museum and cafe at Almannajuvet, in the hope of attracting more tourists to the isolated region. They have always lived in the country and feel at home with the traditional building materials used here – tuff, larch, pine, maple, solid wood flooring and wooden panelling. The village authorities sent us the building permit with the comment “senza perschuasiun” (without conviction). A recently built parking lot had acted like a ramp pushing the snow from the avalanche up against the chapel. Indeed, the project took so long that Wold had time to offer Zumthor another commission in 2006, this one on the Varanger route. The small manor house looks north, facing the moon (luna), as the name of the estate indicates.
